
US forces killed 27 Al-Shabaab fighters in an airstrike during a battle with Somali government forces, according to the US military on Wednesday.
According to a statement from the US command in Africa. The attack was carried out in an area near the Bulo-burde district. While the Somali government forces and the African Union AMISOM were conducting an operation targeting Al-Shabaab militia forces in the Hiran region of central Somalia.
“The preliminary assessment of the command is that 27 Al-Shabaab terrorists were killed in the attack, and no civilians were harmed,” said the press release, which described the attack as self-defense.
“Violent extremist organizations like Al-Shabaab pose long-term threats to the interests of Somalia, the region and the United States,” the statement said.
The African Command of the United States described the attack as the largest in five years carried out by the forces of the Somali government and those of the African Union, AMISOM.
The statement also said that the US airstrike was carried out “at the request of” the government of Somalia.
